A Sanitary Survey on the Welfare Facilities of the Plants in the Young Deung Po Area,Seoul,Korea

Abstract
A study was carried out to find the sanitary conditions of the mess halls, dormitories, barber shop, retail shop and resting rooms in the 45 plants of the 79 large ones (with more than 100 employees) at Young Deung Po Area, Seoul, from August 2 to September 30, 1967.
The results were as follows:
1) Of plants there were 28 mess halls, 9 dormitories, 1 barber shop, 1 retail shop and 7 resting rooms.
2) Average marks of mess halls was 68.7 when they were checked with the chart with Korean health centers were using and those of dormitories, barber shop, retail shop and resting rooms were 68.5, 50.0 and 51.8 respectively. Overall average was 61.6 marks.
3) No refrigerators were found in 13(46.4%) of 28 mess halls and the utensils in one mess hall were washed without any detergent or boiling.
4) The well waters were used in 6 plants(13.3%) for drinking and cooking without any purification and unhygienic open vault privies were found in 34 plants (75.5%)
5) The industrial wastes from 31 plants(68.8%) were discharged to the public sewers whereas those from 14 plants(31.1%) were treated in their own facilities, no special treatments of toxic wastes were carried out.
6) 15 plants (33.3%) had neither baths nor washstands.
7) Average space per person in the dormitories was 1.9m©÷ and sleeping period was 7.5 hours.
8) The first aid kits were found in 11 plants and dispensaries in 6 plants.
There were physicians in 4 plants and 22 health managers who had no previous education on the public health field were found in name but they worked at the other fields.
9) Average number of coliform group in 1 gm of wet kitchen clothes was 13,970.
10) 71.4 per cent of dining boards showed positive result in coliform group test and 50 per cent of disthes, 39.2 per cent of cups, 32.1 per cent of spoons and 21.4 per cent of chopsticks. Overall average was 52.3(kitchen clothes 100.0%)
11) The number of coliform groups in kitchen clothes decreased with increasing the washing times, that is, 13,970 of original coliform groups decreased to 4,041(28.9 per cent decrease) after first washing and to 120(0.9 per cent decrease of original coliform) after second washing in clean water.
12) Average colony number of air borne microbe was the highest at 103.5 in the petri dishes of 9cm diameter with 5 minutes exposures in the mess halls of the textile plants and the lowest at 11.4 in those of the chemical plants. Overall average was 48.7
